Start-Up and Small Business Accountancy for Weymouth and Portland

Straightforward Help for Weymouth’s Small Businesses
Weymouth has been welcoming visitors since King George III made its sands fashionable, and the Georgian seafront he knew still faces the bay. In 2012 the town and neighbouring Portland hosted the Olympic and Paralympic sailing events, and the working harbour remains busy with fishing boats and pleasure craft.
It is a town of small, independent businesses, and new ones open every season. Potter & Pollard help owners in Weymouth and Portland get set up properly and keep on top of their obligations as they grow.

FAQs
Accountancy FAQs for Weymouth
Should I set up as a sole trader or a limited company?
There is no single right answer. A sole trader set-up is simpler to run, while a limited company offers limited liability and is taxed differently. We will explain the legal and tax implications of each and help you choose the one that fits your plans.
When do I have to tell HMRC that I’ve started trading?
If you are self-employed, you need to register for Self Assessment by 5 October following the end of the tax year in which you started. We can handle the registration for you, along with any other taxes that apply to your business.
I have never kept business records before. Can you help?
Yes. We are happy to spend extra time with new businesses helping them set up their bookkeeping records, and we can take over some or all of the bookkeeping later if you would rather not do it yourself.
I’m about to take on my first employee. What needs to happen?
You need to be registered as an employer with HMRC before the first payday, and each time you pay your employee a submission must be made under Real Time Information. Our payroll service covers the payslips, PAYE calculations and filings.
How do we meet, given that you are in Bournemouth?
We are flexible. We can visit you at your home or workplace, or you are welcome at our office in Bournemouth, which has ample free parking.
