Helping Wareham Businesses Start Well and Stay Compliant
Wareham is a Saxon walled town, set between the River Frome and the River Piddle, and its earth ramparts can still be walked today. It is also the gateway to the Isle of Purbeck, which means a steady flow of visitors and a good number of small businesses that serve them.
From our Bournemouth office, Potter & Pollard work with people in Wareham, Sandford, Stoborough and the surrounding villages who are setting up on their own or who want an accountant they can actually talk to.
A Good Start Saves Trouble Later
Every business in Purbeck was new once: a tradesperson going self-employed, a couple opening a café by the Quay, or someone taking a unit at Holton Heath for the first time.
The early decisions matter. Choosing the right structure, registering with HMRC for the right taxes at the right time and setting up simple, reliable records will save you time and money for years. We offer a free initial meeting, and we are happy to put extra free time into helping you set up your bookkeeping.

FAQs
Accountancy FAQs for Wareham
I’m about to start a business in Wareham. Where do I begin?
With a conversation. In a free initial meeting we will talk through your plans, the structure that would suit you, the taxes you need to register for and how to keep your records. Our other start-up work is charged at fixed fees, so you can choose exactly what you want help with.
Do I need to register for VAT straight away?
Not necessarily. Registration becomes compulsory once your taxable turnover passes the VAT threshold (£90,000 at the time of writing) over any rolling twelve months, although some businesses choose to register sooner. We can advise on the timing and deal with the registration for you.
Can you set up a limited company for me?
Yes. We form limited companies tailored to your needs and guide you through each step so that the legal requirements are met from the outset.
I’m a sole trader. When does Making Tax Digital apply to me?
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax began in April 2026 for sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000. It extends to those earning over £30,000 from April 2027 and over £20,000 from April 2028. Once you are within it, you keep digital records and send HMRC quarterly updates, which we can do for you.
How would we work together from Wareham?
However is most convenient for you. We can visit you at your home or workplace, or you can come to our Bournemouth office, which has free parking.
